Most burns happen because of something that’s too hot for you to handle. But burns can also happen when something’s too cold, with friction, chemicals and even from the sun. Knowing how to recognize and treat burns is important. And knowing when to get expert medical care for them can be lifesaving. What are burns?

A burn is an injury to skin, or other tissues, caused by heat, electricity, chemicals, friction, or ionizing radiation (such as sunburn, caused by ultraviolet radiation). [5][9] Most burns are thermal burns caused by contact with heat from hot fluids (called scalding), solids, or fire. [10]

Burn symptoms vary depending on how deep the skin damage is. It can take a day or two for the symptoms of a severe burn to develop. First-degree burn, also called superficial burn. This minor burn affects only the outer layer of the skin, which is called the epidermis. It may cause pain and redness or other changes in skin color.
