The idea is to glue a hardwood dowel in a hole perpendicular to the screw so the threads of the screw grab into the hardwood cross grain (much better hold than end grain). Obviously, you need to use a screw long enough to fully engage in the dowel. And be sure to drill the proper size pilot hole so not to split either of the woods.
